  5. Spiritualism: A Legacy Beyond the Veil with Roxie Zwicker

    October 22, 2019, 6:30 PM

Join noted author and historian Roxie Zwicker from New England Curiosities for an exploration of the Spiritualist movement. During Victorian times, many people craved communication with their lost loved ones and some people were willing to go to great lengths to prove that it existed. People came forward with methods and techniques never seen or heard of before that became popular, controversial, and in some cases downright fraudulent. However, the core of spiritualism - the belief that a spirit world does exist and walk amongst us is still alive with many people today.  In this deeply researched presentation, discover the fascinating tools, techniques and accepted methods of spirit communication (such as séances, table tipping, spirit photography, and mediumship) in the 19th century. Roxie will also introduce guests to the famous and infamous people involved in the early movement. This intriguing presentation is sure to have guests talking... and perhaps the spirits as well.

  15. Book Discussion Series: This Book is on Fire! reads “American Fire” by Monica Hesse

    November 12, 2019, 7:00 PM

Our Fall Book Discussion Series looks at the devastating effect fire can have on our communities, psyches, and environment. From the evidence of climate change increasing the frequency of forest fires to stories of love and arson in Accomack County, Virginia, this series explores the captivating power of flames. The arsons started on a cold November midnight and didn’t stop for months. Night after night, the people of Accomack County waited to see which building would burn down next, regarding each other at first with compassion, and later suspicion. Incorporating this drama into the long-overlooked history of arson in the United States, American Fire re-creates the anguished nights that this quiet county spent lit up in flames, mesmerizingly evoking a microcosm of rural America - a land half gutted before the fires even began. Discussion led by Frumie Selchen.
